Portfolio Manager - Price Change

Why is it that the price change and percent change columns in the portfolio manager seem to take a very long time to update?  I would think it would be automatic and instantaneous once a new current price was entered.  But instead, it seems to be a continuing nagging problem with the portfolio manager.

Neil,

The price and percentage change columns are updated every five minutes in portfolio manager. Would you like to see them updated more often?  Just clarifying what request I should send to that team.

If they were updated every five minutes then that would be great.  But I think you're being told a story.  Yesterday, the change data for new prices which were posted before 6pm EDT were still not updated by the time I posted my message around 6:30.  It's as if the previous price (on which the change is computed) was just forgotten.  And then sometime later, they get around to posting the previous price into a field that is used to compute the change.

Well, let's hope that simply by paying attention to it, the change data will be updated sooner.  Thank you,

Neil

Neil,

It sounds like you are talking about the nightly update of fund data.  I'll check in with the team, though my suspicion is that they are first updating all prices, then going back and calculating price changes.

Neil,

Can you tell me a few of the tickers where you are seeing this discrepancy?  The NAV/$ Change/% Change should all be updated simultaneously, in most cases.  Variables can come into play, like if it is an open-end fund, closed-end fund, ETF, or even particular holdings as sometimes we get an estimated NAV from the company before markets close, which is later updated/revised.

We'll keep an eye on the tickers you give us and track what is going on for each.  So our reply may be delayed by a bit as we monitor the data.

Thanks,

Last night the response time was unusually good overall.  But, the VWEHX price was updated at 6:10pm EDT and the change data was not correct until after 6:30pm EDT.

(between 6:10 and 6:30 it was reporting the change from two days previous).

I will watch and report again this evening.

Thanks, and I'm sorry I went out for dinner so I was unable to check the postings this evening.  Everything looks fine now.  I'll revisit it on Monday.  Thanks again.

Neil,

You may notice a difference between what you see in the portfolio tool and what you see on the quicktake snapshot as we use slightly different data sources for both.  The portfolio tool uses the most recent data we have available, which hasn't been rung through the QA ringer, while the quicktake snapshot uses data that has been fully reviewed.  For that reason, there is a delay on the latter page.  I mention this as it may factor into why you are seeing different data, even potentially on change percentages.

I'd still like to note these discrepancies though, so please let me know as you see them.

Regards,

M*_Darrin

OK, today I'll look at FBALX and FIGRX, two of my portfolio holdings.  I first looked at my portfolio (in portfolio manager only) today at 5:50pm EDT.

Friday, FBALX = $15.00, today = $14.62.  Change is reported as $-0.65 and -4.26%.

Friday, FIGRX = $28.63, today = $ 26.87.  Change is reported as $-1.81 and -6.31%.

These incorrect change data were not corrected as of 6:00pm EDT.

Let's pick on a positive change as well.  Looking at PTRAX.  Price update occurred around 6:00pm EDT.

Friday, PTRAX = 10.36, today = 10.42.  Change is reported as $0.11 and 1.07%.

These incorrect change data (nor the FBALX or FIGRX data from the earlier message) were not corrected as of 6:15pm EDT.

I've been away a few minutes.  All three are showing correct change data now, at 6:24pm EDT.
