Set top boxes

I just got my Government coupon for a set top box (to convert analog TV to digital)...

It says it's good for boxes at Albertson's and K-Mart along with places like Best Buy and Radio Shack.

Are there differences in quality among these boxes?  Can I get a decent enough one at K-Mart, or should I go to Best Buy?

And any suggestions on brand?

Thanks.

The current issue of ConsumerReports (November 2008), p. 40, has a short, but seemingly sufficient, article reviewing DTV converter boxes.

Curiously, it lists an old model of the Zenith DTT900, a unit it previously tested and found satisfactory, rather than the current DTT901 which includes analog signal pass-through.  The DTT901 is the only make and model which provides all the features which CR considered.

I had difficulty finding a retailer which had the DTT901.  Using Google, I found it offered by Meritline.com, listed for $69.99 (a bit pricey, I think, but shipping was “free”).  Meritline will process your coupon online as part of your order and charge only the net cost.

I can not tell you how the unit installed and works; I haven’t yet been sufficiently motivated to undertake the task of getting everything disconnected and reconnected again—to say nothing of the hassle of getting it all working again.  (The value of the few television programs worth the time spent watching hardly outweigh the effort.  If it weren’t for public television, I wouldn’t bother.)

Anyway, good luck.  Regards, Al.

The Insignia model is an exact duplicate of the Zenith and is available at Best Buy. Make sure you get the latest model with analog pass through mainly because there were some sound quality issues in the old models that have been corrected in the new. Most Best Buys I visited in July had some of the new model but more of the old one. The Insignia model you want is NS-DXA1-APT. The APT no doubt is analog pass through.

Thanks guys.

I'm going to swing by Best Buy in a couple of weekends.

If they don't have the Insignia NS-DXA1-APT, I'll see if they have anything comparable.

I went to Radio Shack, and they sold only one model, a Digital Stream unit, for $60. I bought two, using two coupons, for a total outlay of $40. They didn't have them in stock, so I waited a week before receiving them both.

When we dropped cable and went back to rabbit ears in our bedroom, we had terrible reception. With the digital box, "fuzz" transformed into a perfectly clear picture. Plus, we gained a bunch of new digital-only channels that we didn't have before. PLUS, the remote has a button that shows you what's currently playing, as well as all of the programs that will be playing later.

It is a fantastic improvement. A perfect picture with rabbit ears, and more channels.

We also have the Digital Stream from Radio Shack. One gotcha I discovered is that the default power saving setting is configured to turn it off after 4 hours. If you just watch live, it's no big deal to turn the box on again, but it is if you are hooking it to a VCR to record something later.

Al Wahl:

I had difficulty finding a retailer which had the DTT901.

My local Radio Shack had it.  And they didn't have the Digital Stream.

Odd how that works...

What can I do if I have let my coupons expire? Can I register again?

When will we find cut rate no name boxes or used converters at the local flea market?

Depending on what cable company you have, you might not need the adapters.

I've got TWO still in boxes in the garage. I had initially planned to use them where I had cable, but no boxes, to just pull in local channels in the garage and a bedroom.

But Verizon FiOS gave me THREE boxes (they call them digital adapters, previously they were available to rent) that provide all the channels you have subscribed, and I can get rid of one set-top box I'm renting. No rental charge at all.

The units don't provide the menu info, but there is a channel that provides that info.

So check with your cable TV company before purchasing the boxes. I ended up with TWO additional TVs hooked up to cable with no charges, and I can get rid of one set-top box when I get a chance.

They are basic, meaning you can't order movies and such, but I have never used a PPV service in all the years I've had cable, since 1980.
