Need more money for retirement, HELP! Lbucks  11-11-2008, 1:54 PM | Post #2592279  |

I am very new to this site and have never posted on a forum, but plan to spend much more time, reading at least. I would greatly appreciate any help and suggestions. I read the discussion that originated with bbucks ‘Need LOTS of advice with Vanguard 401k and taxable account.’  My husband and I don’t have nearly as much in savings and are a bit older than bbucks so I don’t imagine anyone can help us at this late stage get comfortable in retirement, but every little bit helps. Our one saving grace is that we don’t owe for anything and own our home. The last time the market took a nose dive we wished we had some cash to put into our IRA’s but didn’t. This time we have $9800 (the most we can add—6,000 to spouse, 3,800 for me) but are not sure where to put it.

We currently have appx.

                                                           Me                   Spouse

           @Vanguard                   41,600.                   41,000.

           @Fidelity                      23,550.

Traditional IRA VSEQX           7,800.                     7,300.

            V Strategic Equity

Roth IRA VWELX                   33,600.                   25,300.

            V Wellington

                 VTENX                                                   8,400.

V Target Retirement 2010

Our allocations at Vanguard are for me all assets: 28.3% Bonds, 71.7% Stocks; for spouse: 31% Bonds, 69% Stocks

I also have a 401k with Fidelity

FFVFX Fid Freedom 2015                                         22,000.

FCNTX Fid Contrafund                                                  675.

FDIVX Fid Diversified                                                   285.

WFSVX WFA SM CAP VAL INST                                590.

                                                                                   23,550.

This is 41.67% Domestic Stocks, 13.68% Foreign stocks, 29.52 Bonds, 11.95 Short Term and 3.18% other.

I have other choices with my 401k , most of which are rated 3 Star by Morningstar, e.g. FEQTX, FMAGX, FUSEX, TVIFX, MPEGX, FSEMX, FSIIX, FBALX, FFFAX, FBIDX, FRTXX, and all of the other Fid Freedom funds. The other two available that interest me are AUSAX Columbia Acorn USA Fund Class Z (rated 4 star) and PTTRX  PIMCO Total Return Instl (rated 5 star).

We know we are more heavily weighted in stocks than maybe we should be at our age, but we don’t intend on taking anything out until spouse turns 70 ½  in Feb. 2014, mandatory from Trad. IRA. He already draws SS due to a disability. I plan to work to full retirement age of 66 in 2015, mainly for the health insurance. Would it be better to put the $9800 in Traditional or Roth? And should we reallocate what we already have? And is now a good time to put it in? If ‘bbucks’ stands for big bucks, please call me ‘lbucks’ for little bucks. J I hope this wasn't too long for a first posting. Thanks for any advise anyone could give.
