I'm at an Internet Cafe in Heidelberg, so just a quick reply.

This portfolio is like the ones we've been playing with on the original Risk Management thread. The idea is just to use funds with good risk-adjusted returns, go for diversification, and hedge during times of trouble.

I just threw this together. In my real portfolio I have a much higher allocation to bonds, including a 25% allocation to TIPS (that I've been holding since 2001). Have a lower allocation to equities because I think the S&P could touch the 500-600 level eventually.

More later.

I stumbled across your Buy and hold risk managed portfolio and am very impressed with your work. I'm trying to do something similar in my IRA, which is mostly cash now after last yrs. crash. I can't use PSSDX in my IRA so I was thinking of using SH as a 20% hedge. Analyzing the portfolio from the Mar 9 low, SH would have lost about 30% but the other funds would have made the portfolio very positive. I'm thinking of a 20% hedge due to the high Geopolitical risk or "Black Swan" risk.

Thanks,

Norbert,

I've noticed that you have eliminated your PSSDX hedge. Given that PE10 has now breeched 20, shouldn't there be a 10% hedge for valuation?

Perhaps I have misread something in either your port or the 'rules' for hedging.

As always, your comments and guidance are appreciated.

It would be very interesting to learn more about the composition of your real portfolio and contrast it with your hypothetical models.

When I was young I had a job as a paperboy. I used to go to the sports section everyday to check out the dog racing results. In addition to the results of previous races, they'd post the names of the dogs running in the next night's races. I'd go through and pick the ones I thought would win that night and then check out the winners the following day. I did quite well in those days, but then again, I always do when there's only imaginary money at stake.:)

What are your thoughts relative to incorporating individual stocks within the NCII portfolio strategy? I'm sure you've read thru the arguments posted on the strength of selecting individual stocks especially in this downward moving market as compared to index fund purchases in an attempt to adhere to some sort of asset allocation strategy (Folio Investing has some of this type of info)

I'm in the energy industry. I work within a large publicly traded service company. Trust me, there are huge differences in the make up of the companies within say the OIH index. If I believe strongly that say SLB is a much better "bet" within the energy space than buying the entire energy space as part of some asset allocation strategy then why not allocate more of the overall % of the portfolio to at least some individual securities as well? Again, I think this may have merit in a downward market or a market that is as volatile as this one is and appears to be maintaining over the next several years.

Sorry, I just noticed your post today.

I'm positive on using individual stocks when we have very strong industry & company knowledge - preferably through your kind of hands-on experience.

Ironically, my entire portfolio from 1979 to about 1997 was one energy stock - thanks to a company profit sharing program.

At present my wife works for a large German software company that we think will continue to do well - and might even be acquired. So, we own stock there.
